Bid to beat bus lounge problems Call for more police presence By Emily O’Connell MORE SOLUTIONS to the troublesome bus lounge in Riccarton will be thrashed out tonight. The lounge on the corner of Riccarton Rd and Division St has been plagued with youth issues since it opened in December 2015. A working party consisting of board memHelen bers, business and Broughton landowners, police, community groups and residents’ association representatives have made recommendations for the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board to consider. Tonight the community board will again discuss the problem – with a call for more police presence in the area. Community board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said the recommendation of continued police presence would solve the problem. “We did that with the bus exchange in the city in about 2003. It’s a standard problem with bus exchanges,” she said.

Constable Aaron Thorn agreed additional police presence would help but said resourcing is the problem. “In a perfect world we would be able to supply an officer there around the clock but we just can’t,” he said.

Constable Thorn said in the past they had tasked certain units to be in the area in high peak times which did make a big difference. His preferred option would be crime prevention through environmental design. That would be the beautification of the street, set-

ting up things to help like maybe a couple extra cafes. Constable Thorn also said the crime around the Riccarton bus lounge hasn’t been so bad this winter but predicts they will see a rise as the nights get warmer. Other recommendations made

by the working party are a bylaw, extending bus lounge closing times and removing the free WiFi. Ms Broughton said she thinks most of the recommendations will be put forward for further consideration.

WITH ANY luck a concrete plan will come out of tonight’s Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board meeting over the Riccarton bus lounge. It has been a magnet for trouble since it opened. As we report on page 1, a number of possible solutions will be put to community board members and other interested parties like the police. There has been a call for more police visibility but the reality is the police can’t be everywhere. Also at tonight’s meeting, the fate of silver birch trees in Rempstone Drive, Halswell, is up for decision. Residents have been trying to get rid of them for years and this is almost their final chance. But a city council staff recommendation says they shouldn’t get the chop. A tough one for the community board to make a call on. – Barry Clarke

Pastor to lead new school board By Emily O’Connell SOUTH WEST Baptist Church pastor Warren Read has been appointed board of trustees chairman for the new primary school which will open in Halswell. Pastor Read, Sarah Lowe (deputy chairwoman), Amanda Wall, Giarne Harrison and Rodney King make up the board for the school, which will be sited in Knights Stream Park. The school will open in January 2019. The school, which has not yet been given a name, will cater for up to 450 pupils from year 1-8. Mrs Lowe is a preparatory music director at The Cathedral Grammar School, Mrs Wall is a senior adviser at Regenerate Christchurch, Mrs Harrison is a mother of two children with a background in education, advocacy, community service and administration and Mr King is a guidance counsellor at Oxford Area School. Mr Read said he’s “excited to be part of a great team who have been appointed to set up the new school. I look forward to meeting the community in the days to come.”

In Brief PUPILS GO TO AIMS GAMES About 60 pupils from Cobham Intermediate will head away to the Anchor AIMS Games in Tauranga on Sunday. The games give 11,12 and 13-yearolds an opportunity to compete as an individual or in a team against the best in their age at 20 different sports. SPARKS RD FOOTPATH The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board may pull the plug on the new footpath proposed for Sparks Rd. After a negative response during the community engagement process, city council staff recommended the board not build a footpath for the area. The board will discuss other options tonight at its meeting.

Mr Read said his family built their house in the area three years ago and they love being part of the Halswell Community. He said he has had significant experience serving on a school board and a number of other

trusts. Mr Read explained the school was needed due to the projected population growth in the Halswell area. A second stage is already planned for when the school expands. The second stage would cater

for a roll of 700 pupils and would include more teaching spaces. The board of trustees has a busy 18 months in front of it. It will decide on the school’s values, buying resources and appointing a principal.

BOYS’ HIGH OPENS HALL The first step in Christchurch Boys’ High School’s $32 million upgrade is finished. The school has unveiled its new $4.66 million hall, which has seating for 1350 students. Headmaster Nic Hill said the hall was an important milestone in the school’s overall rebuild. He said the school is aiming to create spaces that won’t date. The next step is in the upgrade is designing the classroom block.

EMERGENCY EYE SURGERY FOR JESS Meet “Jess” an 8 year old black and white moggy with real attitude, who recently flew down from Nelson to see Dr Steve Heap for emergency surgery on her left eye. Her primary vet at Alabama Vets, had seen her a week earlier for a painful superficial ulcer ( probably from a cat scratch injury). Jess was very hard to examine so was started on topical eye ointment and anti-inflammatory medication. Jess was otherwise well. She returned 2 days later as her owners couldn’t medicate the eye either. By this stage her left eye was producing a bloody infected discharge, had swelled up and the ulcer had grown in size. Her vet added in antibiotic tablets and more medication for inflammation, swelling and pain but the next day the ulcer looked no better. Jess needed to be sedated as the vet couldn’t examine this eye with her awake. Her eye was stained with fluorosein( as can be seen in the attached photo) and had become non healing and so given the difficulty in medicating Jess it was thought a better way to go was surgery in Christchurch with DrSteve Heap. So Jess flew to Steve and was operated on immediately to prevent the eye collapsing and impaired vision. Steve performed a lamellar keratectomy to remove the dead, soft, spongy tissue on edges of the deep stromal corneal ulcer. A conjunctival flap was sutured over the large defect to allow the perfect environment for healing, meaning a good blood supply and protection from environmental allergens. Due to the difficulty in checking the healing progress of Jess’s eye it was thought a good idea to board her at McMaster & Heap vets until Steve was happy that the ulcer was healing. As we were still unable to get near

So far so good 4 days out from her surgery. She is eating up a storm and feisty again which means she’s back to her happy self. Steve has given the all clear and she flies home on Friday to her eagerly awaiting, doting parents. Steve sees at least 10 eye referrals daily and many of these patients end up needing surgery. Eye injuries can’t wait if the end result is to save the eye and Steve will often come into the clinic on his days off to see emergency cases. The take home message here is don’t wait with eye problems – get them looked at early by your vet, as two eyes are always better than one!! Dr Michele McMaster

Tree decision likely tonight By Emily O’Connell JOHN AND Gillian Gartly’s bureaucratic nightmare is set to end as they wait to hear if the 19 silver birch trees on their Halswell street will stay. The 10-year process of seeking approval to cut them down may be made at a Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board meeting tonight. But Mr Gartly isn’t hopeful the trees will be cut down as the recommendation is for the community board to decline the request to remove them. Mr Gartly described the whole situation as a “typical city council farcical, giving people the concept they have some say, when they really don’t, because the decision is already made.” Mr Gartly who has lived on Rempstone Drive for nearly two decades, said the trees cause two problems for the residents – they’re a nuisance and a health risk. He said he thinks his wife’s allergies are caused by them. He also said during the

ing the trees away if people can actually provide them with a registered, medical practitioner’s certificate that said whatever they have is a direct cause of the silver birch trees and that is a bar that is too difficult to reach,” Mr Gartly said. “The medical practitioners would always diagnosis on the basis of what the patient tells them and then they’ll qualify that by saying this is in accordance with what the patient said.” Mr Gartly said there are two separate issues to be considered. The first is whether the trees should be removed and the second is if they should be replaced and if so, by who? “The city council would look more favourably on the residents replacing the trees. But let’s face it, they are city council trees. We can’t go out there and cut the things down and because of their height now the city council have to issue themselves a resource consent to cut the trees down,” Mr Gartly said.

News Rotary tees up stroke donation SO FAR about 120 people will be swinging for stroke research at this year’s Rotary Club of Avonhead’s annual golf match in November. The match will include the usual festivities of a hole-in-one competition for a car and a barbecue afterwards. Rotary Club of Avonhead president John Byrne-Winty said they will donate this year’s match money to the Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research. “We want to do the best we can for these people,” Mr ByrneWinty said. He said it was difficult deciding where the money should go but they wanted to choose an organisation which wouldn’t otherwise get support. Although the centre is a Canterbury University entity, it largely relies on private donations. Mr Byrne-Winty hopes to raise around $25,000 and said they will also donate next year’s golf match money to the centre. The centre’s director, MaggieLee Huckabee, was delighted. “The Rotary Club has supported us in the past and we were able to do a lot of research because of their gift, and so

Riccarton teens join national brass band RICCARTON HIGH School students, Emma McMorran, 18, and Toby Buckner, 16, have been accepted into the national secondary school brass band. Emma will be on the tenor horn and Toby will play the solo cornet. Toby was also offered soprano cornet based on his audition. The national brass band has not included a student on the cornet for several years due to the difficulty of playing the instrument, which is usually operated by an adult. It isn’t Toby’s first time on the national stage, though. Last term he performed in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orchestra Festival. Emma and Toby will both travel to Napier for a week in the next school holidays with the band.

TEACHERS enjoyed seeing children become the tutors at the first ever pupil-led education summit in Hornby on Wednesday. As part of the Manaiakalani Outreach programme, 120 pupils from six schools, which are part of the Uru Manuka cluster, gathered at Hornby Primary School. The year 4 to 6 pupils from Hornby Primary, St Bernadette’s, South Hornby, Sockburn, Gilberthorpe and Yaldhurst Model schools rotated around six different workshops, each lasting 45min. The focus of the summit was on digital technology and the pupils taught each other about coding, robotics, blogging and other useful online tools. Hornby Primary School principal Simon Scott said the children loved the summit and behaved so much better when teaching one another. He said the best part was that the information came from a child’s perspective. “Often children are the best teachers. And especially with technology these days, they actually probably know more about it than the adults know about it,” he said. Mr Scott hoped to make the summit an annual occasion.

Russley School to turn out in the hundreds for Augustine By Emily O’Connell HUNDREDS OF children aged between five and 13-years-old will take the stage next week as part of Russley School’s production of Augustine. The musical follows the journey of a girl trying to find her identity while being challenged by good, evil and everything in between. Travelling with her throughout the show will be more than 200 singers and dancers. The production was written and directed by Russley School teacher Chris Walker and will feature 450 pupils. “This show’s characters include gun-toting bandits, dancing leprechauns, singing senoritas and, of course, a masked hero,” said Mr Walker. He also wrote and directed the last school-wide production, Pirate Story. Russley School stages a production every three years. Said Mr Walker: “The standards we set may seem ambitious for primary-aged children but Russley kids are so enthusiastic, so dedicated, plus they’re having so much fun.” Year 8 pupil Christine Martin has a lead role as the Duchess. “She’s an intimidating character and a little mean – I’m enjoying playing the role,” Christine

Tech enthusiast makes tracks for model show

By Roy Sinclair AVONHEAD teenager Celyn Bennet is an unrepentant railway devotee. He best expresses his interest by creating model railway layouts. Owing to space limitations, two of his projects are set up outdoors. Both layouts are based on the popular HO scale or a ratio of 1:87. One of his layouts is ‘Boggy Creek’, which Celyn exhibited at last year’s BIG Model Train Show in Christchurch. It represents a one-time bush tramway associated with a pioneer New Zealand sawmill. He said he “liked the look of” the layout’s integrated sawmill building and rustic steam shovel. The second layout is ‘Tussock Flats’, a work in progress for this year’s show. It represents a typical 1950s New Zealand country railway station with sidings and a main line. “The catalyst for modelling was from watching James May’s Toy Stories television programme, where he talked about his fascination with well-known model train brands, such as Hornby,” Celyn said. He utilises technology when designing and building rolling stock or line side structures. He will compile items on his computer and send them as a 3D model to his 3D printer. The printer then builds the solid item in fine layers of plastic. Celyn sources plans from the NZ Model Railway journal and compiles his computer model utilising AutoCAD Fusion 360 software, which is free for students. LION KING: Cobham Intermediate School pupils are busy preparing for their production of Disney’s The Lion King Junior.

By Emily O’Connell COBHAM Intermediate is putting on a production of Disney’s The Lion King Junior. The show, which has a cast of 80 students, is directed by Mandy Roberts, musical directed by Philippa Chilvers and choreographed by Holly Smitheram. Year 8 students Maggie Harris and Lily Barrowcliffe both act in the production and describe it as a “heartwarming, entertaining family show which will blow you away and take you on a journey through the circle of life.” “From a student’s point of view, we personally think this has helped us break out of our shell and has given us a great

confidence boost. From the outstanding performing, to the gorgeous set and costumes, this show is something you should definitely add on to your calendar,” Maggie said. Students are taking part in all aspects of the show – from performing on stage to working in teams on make-up, set painting, sound, lighting and front-of-house. The production is being held at the school hall from September 25-28. •Tickets are $20 per adult and $15 for children under the age of 16. BUTTERFLIED LAMB LEG WITH ROSEMARY AND GARLIC Ingredients 1 bunch Flat leaf (Italian) parsley 1 bunch Fresh mint 2 medium Red onions, sliced 1 Butterflied boneless leg of lamb, approx. 150-200g per person 3 cloves Garlic, finely chopped 3 Tbsp Chopped rosemary 2 Tbsp Olive oil 1 cup White wine Directions

ICEBERG LETTUCE, WALNUT AND BLUE CHEESE SALAD Ingredients 1 Iceberg lettuce 1 Walnuts, toasted 1 Blue cheese 1 Walnut oil 1 Cider vinegar Directions Remove the outer leaves of a

small iceberg lettuce. Cut the head into four wedges. Toast some walnuts. Crumble some good blue cheese and, using the white bits from the outer edges. Make a creamy dressing by blending them with walnut oil and a little cider vinegar (olive oil is fine if you don’t have walnut). Sprinkle the walnuts and the blue cheese crumbs over the crisp lettuce wedges and spoon over the dressing.

Preheat oven to 220 deg C. In a roasting tray, lay out the parsley and mint, then add the sliced onions. Place the butterflied lamb leg on top of the onions, fat side up (there should be a thin layer of fat on one side). Score the lamb on the side with the fat in large diagonal shapes. Sprinkle over a large pinch of sea salt, and crack over plenty of black pepper. Rub the garlic into the slits where you’ve scored it, then sprinkle over the rosemary and

Anxiety and breathing – are they related?

And, as she points out, using the wrong muscles for breathing means these overworked muscles cause headaches, neck

pain and jaw pain. With fast upper chest breathing, sighing and yawning, the resulting disturbance of our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels can give us the feeling we are not able to control our own body. One moment you are feeling fine, next moment your chest feels tight, you feel out of breath, your heart beats erratically and you may even experience dizziness and/or tingling. Very scary if you do not understand what is happening. No wonder this causes anxiety. Not being the boss over our own body makes us anxious, anxiety feeds the faulty breathing pattern, and so it goes on.
